Vol. 179 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decentralisation of Department of Lands.

40.

asked the Minister for Lands what proposals he has in mind for the decentralisation of the Department of Lands.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by the Taoiseach on 10th instant to two questions on the subject of decentralisation generally. I am satisfied that it would not be in the public interest, at this stage, to divulge details of any proposals affecting my Department.

I presume the Minister is aware of the fact that he was reported in the daily Press as having stated that plans were under way for the decentralisation of his Department and surely he is in a position to say if that is a fact?

On the occasion referred to by the Deputy, I stated that the decentralisation of any portion of the Civil Service presented certain problems that must be taken into account. I also stated on that occasion that I hoped to be in a position to make a specific announcement inside six months. I still adhere to that statement.

Could the Minister say whether that pronouncement made at that time emanated from a Government decision made in that respect?

That is a separate question.
