Vol. 180 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - External Assets held by Central Bank and Departmental Funds.

9.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the depreciation in terms of purchasing power which has taken place in respect of all external assets held by the Central Bank and Departmental funds on 31st December, 1956, which have not since been disposed of.

With regard to the Departmental Funds under my control, the position is that on the basis of the Import Price Index, which appears to be the most appropriate index for measuring changes in the purchasing power of assets invested abroad, there has been no depreciation since December, 1956, in the purchasing power of the assets referred to by the Deputy.

So far as the Central Bank is concerned, the accounts of the bank as furnished to me and presented to the Dáil are not in a form which would enable the information requested by the Deputy to be calculated from them.
