Vol. 180 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compliance with Terms of Army Circular.

29.

asked the Minister for Defence why the terms of circular ref. no. 2 C.N.O.—43 were not complied with in the case of the tenant of No. 5 F Block, Cathal Brugha Barracks.

I do not accept the implication in the Deputy's question. As I stated in reply to questions by the Deputy on this matter last week Paragraph 8 of Defence Force Regulations Q.6 provides that the Ard-Cheathrúnach may, for reasons which to him seem sufficient, order the occupant of any married quarters to vacate them within a specified period.

Is the Minister not aware that the circular referred to stated specifically that the Commanding Officer did not propose to investigate any complaint within married quarters and that if any complaints were made about the alleged misconduct of tenants in these married quarters appropriate legal action should be taken and the Garda Síochána should be notified? In view of that circular, issued by the Commanding Officer, will the Minister state what outside reasons made it so urgent to request this particular tenant to get out of married quarters?

As I explained to the Deputy last week, this action was taken only when it became practically impossible to carry out the ordinary routine administration of the barracks.

May I ask the Minister whether the other individuals who are concerned in this matter were given similar instructions by the Commanding Officer, namely, that they also should accept notice to leave married quarters?

I am not aware that the individuals concerned are in married quarters.

The Minister is no help to the Army.
