Vol. 180 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Cars: Income Tax Liability.

8.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance if he will introduce legislation to make the provision of a State car with two drivers to each Minister and Parliamentary Secretary and the Attorney General taxable for the purpose of payment of income tax by Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and the Attorney General.

I indicated in my reply to the debate on the second stage of the Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Amendment) Bill that arrangements for the transport of Ministers have been in operation for over thirty years and that there are reasons for reviewing them. The question has many aspects, including that raised by the Deputy, all of which will receive very careful consideration.

Mr. Ryan

In view of the fact that businessmen who are given cars by their firms are assessed for income tax in relation to the private use of the cars, why are the Ministers' cars exempt in this respect?

That is one of the aspects I referred to.
