Vol. 180 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Renmore Barracks (Galway): Additional Living Quarters.

20.

asked the Minister for Defence what steps he has taken to build additional living quarters for Army personnel at Renmore Military Barracks, Galway.

As I stated on the 4th November last in reply to a similar question by Deputy Donogh O'Malley in relation to Limerick, the shortage of married quarters for soldiers has not been confined to any particular area but has been a problem at various military centres throughout the country. A programme for the erection of new quarters at the centres where the needs were greatest was drawn up some years ago and has been actively pursued since. Housing schemes have already been completed at Dublin, the Curragh Training Camp and Athlone, and a scheme for the erection of 24 houses at Cork is at present being carried out. It cannot yet be determined when or where the next quota of new houses will be erected but the needs of Galway, Limerick and other centres will receive full consideration in the light of the circumstances obtaining when a decision is being taken in relation to the location of the next housing scheme.

Will the Minister continuously leave the onus on the local bodies to provide houses, as is happening in Galway?

There is a programme ready for the provision of houses but it has not been decided where the next housing scheme will be started.
