asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of civil servants (a) whole-time and (b) part-time on the 1st January in each of the years 1954 to 1960; what organisations, if any (such as the National Health Insurance Society), were assimilated into the Civil Service in any such year and the number of persons brought in on each such assimilation; and what organisations, if any (such as Gaeltarra Éireann), took over work formerly carried out by the Civil Service and the number of persons who in consequence in each such year no longer are included in the count of civil servants requested in the first part of the question.

In 1959 the basis of the Census was altered to exclude certain classes which were previously included. These classes comprise Scale-payment Sub-Postmasters, Branch Managers of Employment Exchanges and certain part-time employees. The estimated figure in respect of these classes is 2,700 at most.
No organisation was assimilated into the Civil Service in any of the years 1954 to 1959 or in 1960 to date.
