asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give particulars of (1) the profit or loss involved in the postal, telegraph and telephone services, (2) expenditure under the Telephone Capital Acts, and (3) salaries and wages for postal, telegraph and telephone services in the form of replies of the 6th May, 1959.

1. The profit or loss on each service in 1958/59 was as follows:—

2. The following table shows for the year 1958/59 the amount expended under the Telephone Capital Acts on the basis requested. Final figures of expenditure for the year 1959/60 are not yet available and the expenditure for that year has been estimated.

The total expended in the various categories does not correspond with the amount expended under the Acts as it is affected by the extent to which stocks of capital stores are run down. The amounts have therefore been expressed as percentages of the total cost of telephone capital works in each year.

The following table shows in respect of the year 1958/59 for each service the total salaries and wages charged as expenditure, expressed as a percentage of the total receipts, credited as income, in the commercial accounts. An estimate only is shown in respect of the year 1959/60 as sufficient information is not yet available to give final figures. Salaries and wages of staff in connection with capital development and renewal works are excluded as these are covered in the commercial accounts by interest and depreciation provisions.
