Vol. 182 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University College, Dublin: Government Nominees on Governing Body.

59.

asked the Minister for Education the names of the Government's nominees on the Governing Body of University College, Dublin, since 1956.

60.

asked the Minister for Education whether any nominees of the Government of senior counsel status were appointed to the Governing Body of University College, Dublin, since 1956; and, if so, what are their names.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 59 and 60 together. The following persons were nominated by the Government to the Governing Body of University College, Dublin for the triennial period beginning on the 1st February, 1956:—

Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick Boylan

Senator Michael Hayes

Mr. David J. Kelleher

Professor John J. O'Meara.

The names of the persons similarly nominated for the triennial period commencing on 1st February, 1959 are:—

Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick Boylan

Mr. Michael Hearne

Máirín Bean Uí Dhálaigh

Mr. Brian C. Walsh.

At the time of his nomination Mr. Brian C. Walsh was practising as a Senior Counsel.

Has the Minister ascertained that since 1956 it was known that certain allegations of irregularities taking place in the Governing Body were being made? The Government were not made aware of them by the Senior Counsel.

Surely that does not arise on the Question?

Further arising out of the Minister's reply, may I point out that there would seem to have been a dereliction of duty on the part of Mr. Walsh? Can it be that that is the reason why he has since been made a Judge of the High Court?

The fund of filth is inexhaustible.

The appointees are not representatives of the Government and they have no such duty as is suggested by the Deputy of reporting to the Government on the proceedings of the Governing Body.

Rubbish. We may take it, then, that Mr. Walsh was quite in order?

The fund of filth is inexhaustible.
