asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each county the number of national schools needing replacement and the number needing substantial repair or renovation.
Written Answers. - Replacement and Renovation of National Schools.
The attached statement gives in column (1) the number, per county, of existing National Schools which require to be replaced by new schools, and in column (2) the number, per county, of existing National Schools which require to be reconstructed or enlarged.
As the records kept by the Commissioners of Public Works and by my Department relate to quarterly periods only, the information shows the position as at the end of the March quarter, 1960.
The statement also gives, in column (3) the number of cases in which grants have been sanctioned for the erection of new schools to replace defective schools included in column (1) but in which building operations had not been commenced, and in column (4) the number of cases in which grants have been sanctioned for the reconstruction of schools included in column (2) but in which works had not commenced.
The figures in column (1) are subject to fluctuations according as new cases are added to the lists or are taken off the lists, where, for instance, contracts for new schools are placed, or where the cases are deferred pending further investigation of the trend of attendances or where improvement works are carried out, etc.
In addition to the figures in column (2) there are a number of cases in which recommendations are awaited from the Office of Public Works as to the feasibility of carrying out schemes of reconstruction.
