Vol. 183 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord Fáilte Grants.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is empowered to obtain from Bord Fáilte Éireann the reasons why they refused to provide grants for the development of certain areas; and, if so, if he will ascertain why grants were refused to Cahirciveen in this respect.

The giving of financial assistance for the development of tourist resorts, whether in accordance with the provisions of the Tourist Traffic Act, 1952, or the Tourist Traffic Act, 1959, is a function of Bord Fáilte Éireann and any enquiries the Deputy wishes to make about particular cases should be addressed to the Board.

Could the Minister state how it is that if Dáil Éireann votes money here for Bord Fáilte Éireann we are not entitled to know in this House how such grants are expended?

Expenditures, as disclosed in the accounts of An Bord Fáilte, are laid before each House of the Oireachtas according to legislation passed by this House and by the Seanad.

Would the Minister state how Bord Fáilte decides to allocate the moneys at their disposal? How is it that this year Bord Fáilte granted thousands of pounds to North Kerry and nothing to South Kerry and yet we have put up schemes there for development of certain areas?

That is a separate question.

Because the Deputy and I gave them that power.
