Vol. 184 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cleaning of Canals.

19.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what arrangements have been made for cleaning the canals; and what action will be taken in future to keep them in a clean condition in Dublin City, particularly during the tourist season.

C.I.E. are required by law to maintain those canals which are still open to navigation in a fit state for that purpose. They have, in addition, undertaken to keep the canal in the Dublin city area free of weeds and to co-operate with the corporation in such further steps as may be found practicable to improve the appearance of the canals.

Is the Minister aware that in spite of what he states, several children were drowned as a result of there being so many weeds in canals in the past few years? "Caught in the weeds" was the verdict of the coroner's court.
