Vol. 184 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American War Planes Patrol.

24.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, in view of the recent landing of an American H-bomber in a disabled condition at Shannon Airport and in view of the threat issued by the Russian Premier that further American spy planes over Russia would bring instant H-bomb retaliation from Russian forces, he will inform the American authorities that American war planes may not land at Shannon Airport, and that in future, if they do land, they shall be interned until it is established that they have not been engaged on patrols which might be considered to be hostile or provocative.

Apart from landings for air-sea rescue operations or emergencies involving the safety of the aircraft and its personnel, foreign military aircraft may not land at Shannon except with express Ministerial permission.

In the circumstances, I do not consider that action of the kind suggested by the Deputy is required.
