Vol. 184 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - London Neon Sign.

22.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he is aware that a large house-size neon sign in Piccadilly Circus in London displays a map of Ireland under the slogan Australia sends her best to Britain; and if he has made or will make representations to those responsible for the advertisement, pointing out that it is politically, economically, geographically and historically incorrect, and a cause of annoyance to the citizens of this sovereign State.

Representations have been made to the Australian High Commissioner in London who has given an assurance that no political significance was intended to attach to the neon sign and has expressed his regret for any embarrassment caused. The High Commissioner has stated that the present sign has now outlived its usefulness and that arrangements are being made to have it replaced in the near future.

Mr. Ryan

Would the Taoiseach say when the representations were made to the Australian High Commissioner in London?

I cannot say.

Mr. Ryan

I shall ask again.
