Vol. 184 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools Water and Toilet Facilities.

59.

asked the Minister for Education the number of national schools that have running water laid on, and the number that are without this necessity.

60.

asked the Minister for Education the number of national schools where the toilet accommodation consists of open cesspools.

A Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, I propose to take questions Nos. 59 and 60 together. The records of my Department do not contain details of the sanitary arrangements in all national schools. I am, therefore, not in a position to furnish the information requested by the Deputy. I might mention, however, that in relation to all new schools and schemes of improvement of existing schools, it is the policy of the Department to have water-flushed sanitation installed wherever water can be obtained. In furtherance of this policy water-flushed sanitation was installed in about 250 school buildings during the past two years.

I might also say that I do not consider the term "open cesspool" is applicable to the toilet accommodation in any national school.
