Vol. 185 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alcohol in Petrol Supplies.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether Irish alcohol is being, or has been, added to Irish petrol supplies; and, if so, what is the resultant price increase in the gross retail price of petrol per gallon.

In accordance with the provisions of the Industrial Alcohol Act, 1938, Irish industrial alcohol is being blended with petrol to produce motor fuel. The resultant increase in the cost of motor fuel is estimated at approximately ?ths of a penny per gallon, but I am not in a position to say how this is reflected in the retail price.

Is the Minister in a position to say what is the annual gross charge represented by ?ths of a penny per gallon? What is one penny on the gallon?

It would be rather difficult to say what proportion the consumer pays. I can give the Deputy the total increased cost to the distributing companies but that would not give him much indication in regard to what he seeks.

Would it be £250,000?

The total increased cost in the year ended 30th September 1960 was £134,239 17s. 6d.

The total extra cost?
