Vol. 186 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. Luke's Hospital: Cobalt Bomb Equipment.

23.

asked the Minister for Health whether a request has been made by the medical or other authorities at St. Luke's Cancer Hospital for the provision of cobalt bomb equipment which is required in the treatment of cancer.

I have agreed to a proposal of the Cancer Association of Ireland that provision for the use of radio-active cobalt in the treatment of Cancer should be made at St. Luke's Hospital, and I have made available a grant from the Hospitals Trust Fund for the purpose. The order for the supply of the treatment unit was placed by the Association last year. A decision on the acceptance of a tender for the erection of the building to house the unit has been taken by the Association and the final formalities are on the point of completion. I understand that it is expected that building operations will commence immediately.

Could the Minister say when the request was first made?

About 1958. At that time we had no money to buy a bomb or anything else.

You are buying jets with it now.
