Vol. 186 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Data.

65.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will make available to Irish fishermen the data collected by the exploratory vessel since research began; and, if so, when.

When the Cú Feasa is searching for herring shoals the results are immediately conveyed to Irish boats fishing in the area. Other data collected by the vessel are not of immediate interest to the fishermen until conclusions can be drawn. Any helpful information will, of course, be made available to the fishermen as soon as it is assembled. For instance, a leaflet about Dublin Bay prawns has recently been issued.

Do I understand the Minister to say that this exploratory vessel has been engaged in research for herrings off Dunmore, the very spot where everybody knows there are herrings and that the vessel has not come to the north or northwest in an effort to locate the shoals? Do I understand the Minister to say that the result of six months' exploratory work by this vessel is that there are prawns in Dublin Bay?

A very interesting announcement.

I am sure the Deputy realises that there is a fair amount of scientific work to be done even in the places where it is known fish is to be had.

The fish will be gone by the time we get the information.

It is hoped to arrange that the vessel will undertake some work on the west coast within the next few months.
