Vol. 186 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Control.

10.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if, as a means of speeding up traffic movement at peak periods in Dublin, arrangements will be made to control junctions on routes of heavy traffic at peak hours by members of the Garda Síochána instead of by traffic lights.

I am informed by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, that, wherever it is considered advantageous to do so, traffic lights are in fact switched off and manual control of the junction by the Garda Síochána substituted.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to reply if there is any place in Dublin where this takes place daily?

Yes; there are a number of junctions at which it happens, when necessary. Indeed, the whole question of expediting traffic is under continual review and where it would appear to be advantageous to substitute manual control for lights, that will be considered from time to time as the situation seems to require.

Mr. Ryan

Would the Parliamentary Secretary care to name the junctions?

Tara Street-Pearse Street is one.
