Vol. 186 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Articles: Duty Yield.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each of the thirteen articles specified in the Imposition of Duties Bill, 1961, (1) the volume and value of imports of each such article in the last five years and (2) the estimated yield of each duty, now to be confirmed, in a normal full year.

As regards part I of the Question records are not available, from which the information requested can be given in the case of ten of the articles concerned. It would involve an undue expenditure of official time to give the particulars requested for the remaining three items.

As regards part 2 of the Question records are not available, from which the separate estimates of the yield of duty can be given, except in relation to five of the articles concerned. The information, which it is possible to give, is in the form of a tabular statement and I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Imposition of Duties (No. 99) (Socks of Man-made Fibres) Order, 1960.

Amendment of duty on socks of Man-made fibres.(e)

3,000

(a) The effect of the Order was to introduce minimum rates into the existing duty on oy balloons. The estimate given represents the total yield from toy balloons.

(b) The net effect of the Order was to extend the duty to plastic parts of ball-point pens other than refills and component parts of refills. The estimate relates to the yield from the parts added.

(c) The duty on watches, movements, etc., was completely revised and the particulars given relate to all imports liable to the amended heading. In fact an overall drop in duty is anticipated.

(d) This is a new duty.

(e) The Order amended an existing duty on certain socks by introducing a minimum rate of duty of 50/- per dozen pairs. The estimate indicates the yield from the amended duty on these articles and allows for a substantial fall in receipts.
