Vol. 186 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Barbed Wire.

12.

asked the Minister of Industry and Commerce if he is aware that 6 inch × 220 yds. reels of Irish manufactured barbed wire cost 31s. 6d. each and 3 inch × 220 yds. reels cost 35s. 9d. each with a five to six months wait on delivery whereas the comparative costs for Belgian wire are 21s. 11d. and 24s. 11d. respectively; and if, as there is a 37½ per cent. duty on Belgian barbed wire, he will consider reducing the duty.

I understand that prices of Irish and Belgian barbed wire are as stated in the Deputy's question. It appears, however, that the prices of the Irish product compare favourably with British prices.

I am informed that recently owing to reorganisation of plant and the installation of new machines there had been some delay in the delivery of material by the home manufacturer. I am assured, however, that the delivery period is now from two to three months.

The duty is necessary to protect the home manufacturer against imports of low priced Continental material, and it is not proposed to reduce it.
