Vol. 187 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Telephone Services.

36.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has received any complaints from Bord Fáilte about the inadequacy of the telephone service in the Castlecove-Caherdaniel area, County Kerry, during the tourist season, as post offices in those districts close to the public at 6 or 6.30 p.m. and as there is only a limited service on Sundays and bank holidays; and if he will arrange for a day and night service in both post office areas.

I have received no complaint from Bord Fáilte about the telephone service in the Castlecove-Caherdaniel area.

The hours of service at Caherdaniel exchange, which also serves the Castlecove area, are:—

Weekdays—8.0 a.m.-10.0 p.m.

Sundays and Bank Holidays—9.0 a.m.-10.30 a.m.; 7.0 p.m.-9.0 p.m.

These are the standard hours of service at all Exchanges with less than 20 subscribers. There are 12 subscribers at Caherdaniel exchange of whom five are provided with continuous service by switching their lines through to Waterville when Caherdaniel exchange is closed. It has recently become possible to extend the facility to three other Caherdaniel subscribers and arrangements accordingly are being made. Continuous service will be given to all the subscribers when their number reaches 20.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate the desirability of laying telephone wires between Sneem and Castlecove, County Kerry, in order to overcome the delays in telephone calls from each of those districts.

The number of telephone calls exchanged between Sneem and Castlecove is very small and would not warrant the provision of a direct telephone connection between the two places.

Plans are under examination for the provision of additional trunk circuits in the Castlecove and Sneem areas but it is not possible to indicate at this stage when the additional circuits will be available.
