Vol. 187 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scholarships for non-Gaeltacht Students.

33.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate the scholarships which will be available to pupils in non-Gaeltacht areas to replace the preparatory college scholarships which were previously available in those areas.

It is my intention to establish an extended scheme of scholarships tenable in post-primary schools. For this purpose, I hope to introduce a Bill in Dáil Éireann at an early date. I cannot at this stage make any statement which would anticipate the provisions of the Bill.

I wish to point out, however, that securing a place in a Preparatory College did not mean securing a scholarship, as a school fee was payable in respect of the maintenance and tuition of each pupil in the Colleges. The remission of the whole or part of the fee was sanctioned only where the inability of the parents or guardians of the pupils concerned to pay the fee in full had been established.
