Vol. 188 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Classes.

32.

asked the Minister for Education the number of classes in secondary schools with more than twenty-five pupils per class in each of the years 1950-1959.

The information supplied to my Department is not in such a form as would enable me to furnish the particulars sought by the Deputy.

I am satisfied that the problem of large classes in secondary schools is not such as to warrant the time and labour which would be involved in obtaining the particulars from individual schools.

That this is so will be appreciated when I say that the Department's regulations for the staffing of secondary schools provide for one teacher for every 15 pupils up to 60 pupils and one teacher for every 20 pupils thereafter.
