The information available on the relevant net income for balance of payments purposes relates to the gross freight earnings of Irish shipping companies from all activities, except coastal transport, less payments made outside the State (for equipment, charter hire, repairs, bunkers, stores, harbour dues, etc.). The net earnings in each year 1950 to 1959 are shown in the following table:
