Vol. 188 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meelick (Mayo) Telephone Facilities.

29.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the fact that the nearest telephone to Meelick, Swinford, County Mayo, is four miles away he will arrange for the extension of the line and the erection of a kiosk there as early as possible.

The use likely to be made of a public telephone kiosk at Meelick would not be sufficient to justify the erection of a kiosk there.

Would the Minister not consider that a centre such as this would need a kiosk?

The policy of the Department is to provide public telephones in rural areas by way of call offices in local post offices and in towns and villages where there is a population of a minimum of about 300 and where the receipts from the calls are sufficient to meet at least the capital costs and the maintenance charges. Those charges would not be met from a telephone kiosk in this village.
