Vol. 188 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sanitary Accommodation at Meelick (Mayo) School.

30.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the lack of adequate sanitary accommodation at Meelick national school, County Mayo; and if he will take steps to have proper accommodation provided at once.

I assume that the school to which the Deputy refers is Culleens National School which is situated near Meelick, Co. Mayo.

The Commissioners of Public Works have recommended that this school should be replaced by a new school on a new site. The Reverend Manager has been advised accordingly but has not yet succeeded in obtaining a suitable site.

Attention has been drawn to the bad condition of the latrines, and the Commissioners have been asked to furnish a report and recommendation in the matter. On receipt of the report my Department will communicate with the manager of the school.

In view of the difficulty of acquiring a site for a new school in this locality, would the Minister in the meantime take every step to furnish the accommodation requested? I can assure him that the conditions there are pretty primitive.

What the Deputy is asking me now is more or less a question for the Manager. He has encountered difficulties in securing a site——

——but I think he has almost solved the problem now.
