Vol. 189 No. 7

Written Answers. - Statistics of Incomes.

46.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons in the State with incomes (a) between £1,500 and £2,000 per annum and (b) over £2,000 per annum for each of the years 1950-1959.

Statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable the precise information requested by the Deputy to be given. The following are, however, estimates of the numbers of persons liable to Sur-tax for the years 1950-51 to 1959-60 under the headings specified in the question.

†The starting point for Sur-tax for 1958-59 was £2,000 while under this yeax's Budget proposals the starting point for 1959-60 will be £2,600. In addition, certain of the personal allowances were granted as deduc— tions for Sur-tax purposes with effect as from 1958-59. It should be noted therefore that the numbers given above for the wears 1958-59 and 1959-60 do not include all persons with incomes in excess of £2,000 as some of these would not be liable to Sur-tax because of the operation of the reliefs mentioned.
