Vol. 189 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service for Long Island, Schull.

9.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has approved of a telephone service for Long Island, Schull, County Cork; and, if so, when it will be provided.

As the Deputy is aware the question of amenities on islands, including Long Island, is under examination at present by an interdepartmental Committee. The Committee has not yet reported, but I hope to be in a position to give a decision regarding telephone service on Long Island within a short time.

Is the Minister aware that this question has been under active consideration by his Department for more than five years? Surely it is about time some definite reply was forthcoming so that these 50 people on Long Island will be provided with a telephone service?

I am aware that this question has been under examination for a long number of years, and I am making every effort I possibly can to have an early decision reached.

Will the Minister define the term "early decision"— a month?

I cannot give any definite date.
