Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Services at Spawell (Dublin).

85.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for water and sewerage services for the county council cottages at Spawell, Templeogue, County Dublin; and if Dublin County Council will give this matter priority attention.

The provision of the public services referred to is primarily a matter for the local authority.

I understand that Dublin County Council are considering a scheme whereby a piped water supply may be brought into the cottages at Spawell, Templeogue, in place of the present supply from public pumps. The priority to be observed in regard to the scheme is a matter entirely for the local authority. The provision of a public sewerage scheme for this group of cottages is not contemplated.

In relation to all these matters of the provision of water supplies and sewerage schemes, I would draw the Minister's attention to the fact that these areas are on the fringes of Dublin city and is it not highly desirable that the Dublin County Council should regard the provision of these basic amenities as a matter of extreme urgency? In the light of that, would the Minister make representations to the Dublin County Council about the urgency of having these matters attended to and having whatever engineering difficulties that may be there overcome? They can be overcome if the will to do so is applied.

I should like to say that I agree entirely with the Deputy's viewpoint in this matter as I feel sure the Deputy and the House are well aware. I feel sure also that the Dublin County Council, as well as all the other local authorities, are well aware of my mind in this matter and I hope that anything I have said here will be taken to heart by them. Nobody will be more delighted than I will if they do show a change of heart in this matter.
