Vol. 192 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of Telephonists.

23.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that a temporary telephonist has a 40 hour week and is paid £7 14s. 2d. (with a claim pending sanction) i.e. 3/10¼d. per hour for a 40 hour week while a sub-postmaster who goes on continuous telephone service is paid 4.1d. per hour, i.e. eleven times less than a temporary telephonist; and, if so, if he will have this inequity remedied immediately.

A claim by the Sub-postmasters' Union for increases in the allowances paid for providing continuous telephone service is at present under consideration by the Subpostmasters' Consultative Council. It would be inappropriate for me therefore to comment on the matter at this stage.

Can the Minister say how long it has been under consideration? I have heard that same reply given for the past couple of years.

There have been a couple of claims before the Consultative Council over the past few years. This is a new claim.

It is a great while under consideration.
