To be eligible for enlistment in An Fórsa Cosanta Aitiúil applicants must be not less than 17 years and not more than 35 years of age. In the case of former members of the Permanent Defence Force or of the Reserve of Men (First Line) who have had not less than one year's full-time military service subsequent to the 1st June, 1940, the upper age limit for enlistment in An Fórsa Cosanta Aitiúil is 40 years, while in the case of former men of the Permanent Defence Force or of the Reserve of Men (First Line) who, immediately prior to discharge, held the rank of Sergeant or higher non-commissioned rank, the upper age limit is 45 years.
