Vol. 193 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Co-ordination of Defensive Measures.

1.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether any proposals have been advanced to the Government as to the discharge of its responsibilities in the co-ordination of defensive measures in the EEC.

The Government have received no such proposals.

Can we take it that we must join before we know what our responsibilities are with regard to defence as members of EEC?

I did not even understand the Deputy's question. The EEC has no function in the co-ordination of defensive measures.

Is it not a fact with regard to the political implications of EEC that defensive measures are of equal importance in EEC?

That is clearly outside the scope of this question.

Does it amount to the fact that the Taoiseach is prepared at this stage, as far as our commitments and our responsibilities as members of EEC are concerned, to buy a pig in a poke?

Is the Taoiseach aware that everybody would be very relieved to have his assurance that as members of EEC, we cannot be asked at any time to take part in any defence agreements in Europe?

Unless we join the Russian Common Market.

I have replied to the question I have been asked. We have received no such proposal.

That we will not become involved in any defence agreements——

Question No. 2.
