Vol. 193 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Domestic Science Students.

52.

asked the Minister for Education whether he will take steps to ensure that second year students training in domestic science, when attending vocational schools as part of their training course, should in future be allocated as far as possible to vocational schools in their home districts in order to avoid the difficulty and expense of attending schools at some distance from their homes.

The scheme to which the Deputy refers is operated by the domestic science teacher training colleges, with the cooperation and assistance of county vocational education committees. The purpose is to give, while in training, an insight into the organisation and working of the rural school.

It will be appreciated that it is not possible to find suitable schools for all students convenient to their homes. However, the training college authorities make every effort consistent with the essential educational requirements of the scheme, to avoid unnecessary expense on parents and special attention is given to any case which might involve hardship. The arrangements are such that the majority of the students spend their fortnight in the rural schools immediately before Easter, and are thus able to go direct to their homes for the vacation.
