asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the Departments in which more than 20 additional civil servants have been provided for in the current Book of Estimates as against last year, the number so provided in each such Department, and the reason for the additional staff.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

The following are the Departments in which more than twenty additional civil servants have been provided for in the current Book of Estimates as against last year, the additional number so provided in each such Department and the main reasons for the additional staff:

76 for PAYE. 6 for the reclassification of customs duties into Brussels nomenclature. 2 to detect customs evasion. 1 miscellaneous.

Prisons

19 to implement a conciliation agreement providing for a reduction in the hours worked by Prison Officers. 9 to meet special supervisory needs in connection with the custody of prisoners (which include those sentenced by the Special Criminal Court).

Forestry

25 due to general expansion of operations. 4 for assessment and research. 1 for work study.

Agriculture

44 for Bovine T.B. Eradication. 6 in the Veterinary College. 4 for the improvement of plant breeding and 4 for the improve- ment of poultry breeding. 5 miscellaneous.

Industry and Commerce

12 for An Cheard-Chomhairle (including typing staff). 10 for the Industrial Development Authority (including typing staff). 1 miscellaneous.

Transport and Power

38 due to the opening of Cork Airport. 3 for O and M and general establishment work. 3 supernumerary in replacement of officers on loan to Nítrigin Éireann Teoranta and the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited. 2 miscellaneous.

Post Office

427 due to the growth in telephone business. 89 in Metropolitan and Provincial Offices due to the growth in other Post Office business. 6 in Stores Branch for factory warehousing and distribution. 6 for Civil Aviation and Meteorological Wireless Services. 4 miscellaneous. These additions, totalling 532, were offset by reductions totalling 183, in respect of 45 posts saved by the mechanisation of the Post Office Savings Bank and 138 broadcasting staff transferred to Radio Éireann.
