Vol. 193 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish-American Air Discussions.

28.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether the discussions concerned with the American request to over-fly Shannon or to fly into Dublin have yet concluded.

I have nothing to add to the replies I gave to Deputies Norton and Coughlan on 14th February, 1962, about the discussions with the United States Government on the bilateral Air Transport Agreement.

Have the American air companies been told that we are not prepared to grant them permission to fly into Dublin and if so, what is the difficulty in regard to the Minister making an official announcement in order to set people's fears at rest?

I have nothing more to say on the matter. We are still awaiting a reply from the United States Government and it is not customary to publish any statement until negotiations have been completed.

Is the present position therefore that we have told the United States companies that we are not prepared to afford facilities to fly into Dublin to the detriment of Shannon and we are awaiting their observations on that?

Will the Deputy consider the wisdom of leaving well enough as it is?

People are entitled to know the results of these discussions after they have been going on for some months and no arrangement made for their resumption.
