Vol. 193 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ringsend (Dublin) Flats.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether in view of the grave shortage of suitable housing accommodation in the Ringsend area he will ensure that the necessary powers needed by the Corporation to acquire for housing accommodation the site at Cambridge Place and the surrounding area in Ringsend will be written into the forthcoming Regional and Town Planning Bill in order that the Corporation may proceed with the building of badly needed flats without delay.

All the powers necessary for the acquisition of land for housing purposes are already available to the Corporation. I understand, however, that they are advised that there would be a legal difficulty in exercising powers of compulsory purchase where this would conflict with the zoning provisions of their planning scheme. It is expected that this difficulty will be overcome when the proposed new legislation to replace the Town and Regional Planning Acts will be enacted. It will then be open to the Corporation if they so desire to consider without restriction what, if any, proposals for the acquisition of further lands for housing purposes in the area referred to by the Deputy should be initiated by them.
