Vol. 193 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Party Political Television Broadcasts.

57.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether it is intended to allow Party political broadcasts on television during the inter-election period; and, if so, what Parties may be represented.

I have no function in this matter and I have nothing to add to my replies to previous Questions regarding Party political broadcasts on television.

Is it not a fact that none of the minority groups has been given facilities by the Television Authority for inter-election broadcasts? Does the Minister approve of that decision?

It is a matter for the Authority and I presume the Authority will deal with that aspect of the Question.

Is it not a fact that one of the proud boasts of so-called democracies is that while they do not agree with the minority, they feel that they should defend the right of the minority to express their views? In those circumstances, will the Minister give the minorities the same facilities as the majority?

That is a matter of opinion and has nothing to do with the Question.

Did the Deputy use the expression "so-called democracies"?

Is it not a fact that the election agent of the Minister for Health is on the Board of the Television Authority?

That is not the reason.

Of course, it is the reason. Whether you are responsible or irresponsible, you cannot wash your hands of that.

The remaining Questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
