Vol. 194 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Slips and Piers.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received a number of proposals for the improvement of slips and piers in West Cork; and, if so, if he will indicate the present position regarding each such proposal.

Grants have been sanctioned in the following cases:—

Crookhaven: Construction of mass concrete steps to provide low water landing facilities.

Dursey Mainland: Improvement of landing facilities. Work is nearing completion.

Dursey Island: Improvement of landing facilities. Acquisition of a site and a right-of-way thereto is being negotiated by the County Council.

Lehanebeg, Cahermore: Construction of quay and approach roads.

Tragawla (Bere Island): Improvement of slip.

It is hoped to carry out the works at Crookhaven, Lehanebeg and Tragawla this year. The start of the work at Dursey Island is held up pending the acquisition by the County Council of a site and right-of-way.

The sponsoring Departments have been furnished with plans and estimates of cost in three cases—viz., Gerahies (Lochan)—improvement of landing facilities; Firkeal (Glengarriff) —cleaning and dredging at pier; Oilean na gCaorach (Bere Island)— removal of rock and erection of a shelter on slip.

Proposals for works at six centres have been inspected and surveyed and designs of schemes with plans and estimates are being prepared for transmission to the Sponsoring Departments. The six cases are: Baltimore— provision of a slip; Cleanderry—erection of a breakwater; Garnish—construction of a breakwater; Myross (Blind Harbour)—repairs to landing slip; Pallas (Ardgroom)—extension of pier; Reen (Castletownsend)—extension of pier.

Two other proposals for works— viz., Hare Island and Tranferla Strand (Allihies)—are awaiting inspection. It just shows you that Deputy Murphy's constituency is not neglected.

You had better supply a few padlocks for the factory in Schull.
