Estimates of the purchasing power of money are based on the retail price index numbers which are calculated at mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year. It is estimated on the basis of these index numbers that £1 at mid-February, 1962 would purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as would 7s. 1d. at mid-February, 1938, 12s. 0d. at mid-February, 1947 and 14s. 10d. at mid-February, 1952.
