Vol. 194 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agene in Bread Making.

7.

asked the Minister for Health whether agene may be used by millers or in the bakery trade in the production of bread; and, if not, by whom its use was discontinued, and why.

A recommendation was received in October, 1955, from a scientific committee which was set up to consider the use of improvers and bleachers in the production of flour and bread, that the use of agene as an improver and bleacher should be discontinued. An agreement providing for the discontinuance of its use was reached between the Departments of Industry and Commerce and Health and the milling and bakery industries in July, 1956. The use of agene ceased as from 28th September, 1957.

Could I ask the Minister why the use of agene was forbidden?

Because a scientific investigation pronounced it harmful.

In view of the scientific findings of the College of Physicians with regard to cigarette smoking, would the Minister not consider taking similar steps?

That is a different matter.

We are considering that.
