Vol. 194 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tables of Economic Statistics.

103.

asked the Taoiseach if he will arrange to have certain Tables in Economic Statistics 1961 expanded in Economic Statistics 1962 as follows: Table 7—“Census figures 1961” for each head, Table 10— separate figures for “Forestry and Fishing”, Table 11—separate figures for “Forestry and Fishing”, Table 15—insert actual amount of “Industrial earnings” and “agricultural wages” to which the base “1953=100” is related and state estimated “wages” or “earnings” per hour for each year; and if he will arrange for additional tables to cover details of agricultural income, expenses and profits and details of State aid to industry and agriculture in the Book of Estimates.

It is not possible to include in Table 7 of Economic Statistics, 1962, figures from the 1961 Census of Population as the data in question are not yet available.

With regard to the publication of separate figures for Forestry and Fishing in Tables 10 and 11, it is not the practice to show, in official statistical publications relating to national income, details in respect of small sectors of the economy for which the figures cannot be determined accurately. For this reason it is not proposed to give separate estimates for the sector Forestry and Fishing. The amount involved is only about 2 to 3 per cent. of the total in the sector Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

It is proposed to include in Table 15 actual amounts of average weekly industrial earnings and minimum weekly agricultural wage rates for each year.

The material published in Economic Statistics comprises only summary data and in particular the national income figures for the latest year are only very preliminary estimates. In such circumstances it is not proposed to include details of agricultural income, expenses and profits in Economic Statistics, 1962, but consideration is being given to publishing these figures in the usual article on Agricultural Output which will appear in the June, 1962 issue of the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin.

It is not proposed to show details of State aid to industry and agriculture in the publication in question. As the Deputy is aware details of State aid to agriculture are shown in the tables issued in connection with the Financial Statement.
