Vol. 194 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telefís Éireann Interference with U.T.V.

25.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why any one of the following alternatives is not satisfactory to avoid Telefís Éireann interference from Mount Leinster with the U.T.V. programme: (1) to move to Band 1, (2) to change frequencies with Cork (175.25—181.25) and move the entire channel lower by 1½-2 mc/s to avoid sound interference with Kippure on 181.25 mc/s, (3) to change frequency with Sligo (215.25—221.25).

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to the adjournment debate last night.

The existing frequency assignments for the Irish television service are the most suitable from the point of view of providing a domestic service of good quality, and the standard of protection given to the U.T.V. transmissions is in accordance with the planning principles adopted by the Stockholm Conference.

The answers to the Deputy's specific questions are as follows:

(1) Only three 625 line channels can be accommodated in Band 1. Gort will occupy channel B. The use of channel A for Mount Leinster would result in interference to the B.B.C. transmissions on channel 1. Channel C would not be suitable because of interference from B.B.C. stations on channels 4 and 5, including in particular Pembroke and Wenvoe (South Wales) and North Hessary Tor (Devon).

(2) The use of a modified channel D for Mount Leinster would be unsatisfactory because of the Stockholm assignments for new stations on channel 6 in Great Britain and the Six Counties, including in particular Black Mountain (Belfast), Llangollen (Wales) and Stockland Hill (Devon).

(3) An interchange with Sligo would result in interference within the service area of both the Sligo and the U.T.V. transmitters.
