Vol. 194 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the very serious damage occurring at Strandhill, County Sligo from tidal erosion; that the recent works carried out have been undermined and broken up; and that the car terrace and road are likely to be damaged or washed away this year with consequent damage to the property and homes of the residents; and what action he proposes to take to effect permanent protection to public and private property in this seaside resort.

I understand that certain works carried out by the county council at Strandhill have been seriously damaged by the sea in recent storms, and that further damage may ensue. Permanent protection against such damage can, however, be effected only by works designed to check coast erosion in this area. As regards remedial measures, I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance on the 28th February, 1962, to questions on this subject.
