Vol. 194 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children's Allowances.

44.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether in view of the increase in the cost of living he will introduce legislation to increase children's allowances at an early date.

Children's allowances under the Social Welfare (Children's Allowances) Acts, 1944 to 1957, were first introduced in 1944 and were increased in 1952 and 1957. These increases are proportionately greater than the increase in the cost of living between 1944 and the present day. Consequently a comparison of the increase in the cost of living with the increases which have taken place in children's allowances since their introduction would not provide a basis for further increasing them.
