Vol. 194 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Sligo Estate.

47.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the acute congestion obtaining in the Ballinacarrow area of County Sligo; and if the Land Commission will accordingly consider the propriety of having the Moran estate at Ballinacarrow acquired to relieve this congestion or, alternatively, have the owner of this estate migrated.

I am aware that there is congestion in this district. To date, there have been no proceedings for acquisition of the estate mentioned but representations have been made for the migration of the owner of this estate in order to relieve local congestion.

The Deputy's views on the matter will be brought to the notice of the Land Commission.

Is the Minister aware that the average farm of arable land in my constituency of Sligo-Leitrim is under 30 statute acres? If that is accepted, would the Minister agree that migration generally in my constituency is desirable in order to establish economic holdings?

I am aware that there is congestion in this area and one of the methods to deal with it is migration. As I said, I am referring the Deputy's representations in the matter for any consideration possible.
