I do not consider a subsidy as suggested to be appropriate, the circumstances here being quite different from those in the United Kingdom. The number of cows (including in-calf heifers) has increased from 1,296,100 in 1956 to a record figure of 1,417,800 in 1961, i.e. by about 10 per cent., notwithstanding the effect of Bovine T.B. eradication measures.
