Vol. 194 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Lifeboat Service.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what steps, if any, he proposes to take to ensure the provision of a lifeboat rescue service on the north-west coast of County Mayo.

The provision of lifeboat rescue services around our coasts is not undertaken by my Department. I understand that the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which provides such services, keeps under constant review the organisation and location of lifeboat stations having regard to the density of the sea-going traffic and the navigational dangers and that they are at present examining the need for an additional lifeboat station on the west coast.

Can the Minister indicate where the nearest service is?

The nearest stations are at Kilronan and Arranmore.

Is it a fact that on recent occasions when the British Government came to our assistance and provided helicopters for a service such as this we did not have the courtesy to thank them, as reported in the English Press?

The Deputy will get a very satisfactory answer to that later this week.

I shall be glad if I do.
