Vol. 194 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revenue from Motor Vehicle and Petrol Duties.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the year ended 31st March 1962 the total revenue collected by way of customs duties on (a) mechanically propelled vehicles, and (b) petrol, and the amount of motor vehicle duty collected.

In the year ended 31st March, 1962, the approximate net receipts from the customs duty and Special Import Levy on motor vehicles were £3,410,000. Separate figures for petrol are not available, but the receipts for the same year from the customs duty on mineral hydrocarbon light oil (which is practically all petrol) were approximately £238,000.

I might mention that the approximate net receipts of excise duty in 1961/62 from mineral hydrocarbon light oil were £12,543,000 and from tyres were £488,000.

The amount received by the Exchequer in 1961/62 from the excise duties on motor vehicles etc. was approximately £6,927,000.
