Vol. 194 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance of Motor Cars.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that certain insurance companies are now refusing to insure cars except only on a third party basis, although those companies issued full comprehensive insurances up to this year.

I have no information in regard to this matter. In any event, I have no statutory function in a matter of this kind, which relates to the day-to-day administration of their business by the insurance companies.

Surely the Minister is aware that the insurance companies are at present behaving scandalously, possibly because of the fact that the Minister would not allow them to increase their premiums further? Will he not even at this late stage try to prevent them for further fleecing the public?

That is extravagant language and I have no evidence it is properly founded.

Would the Minister look for the evidence?

Any evidence of the existence of the type of behaviour of which the Deputy complains would readily come to my Department and no such evidence has come.

If it does, will the Minister investigate it?

I shall certainly investigate anything within my competence.
