asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the practice whereby Mayo County Council reckons the earnings outside the State of migratory labourers and others so as to deprive them of the benefits of supplementary new house and reconstruction grants; and whether his approval is necessary for this practice.

Mr. Browne
The assessment of the income of applicants for supplementary grants in respect of new houses is a function of the housing authority concerned, subject to the provisions of Section 10 of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1952, as amended, and their decisions are not subject to my approval. The statutory provisions governing the making of grants in respect of the reconstruction of houses do not impose any income limit of eligibility.
